Maggies Place

Restaurants in Roda

Jim M  (09 January 2005)

We eat there all the time & it is without doubt the best breakfast on the Island. Even better now that it is open in the winter at weekends.

Our friends & family that visit have never complained, in fact we have to insist that they try some greek restaurants for a taste of Corfu. It is so busy in the summer that we have had to wait for a table to become available - much better now they have the pub next door.

We live here & enjoy a taste of English food to remind us of home.

I see a few sour remarks - I can only presume these are a personal attack on Maggie & Des, shame on you, who ever you are. As for not acknowledging you on your 2 visits Clare how important are you? We are regular customers & if Maggie or Des do not speak to us we do not attack them on a website for being too busy or having other matters on their hands, they are human after all - maybe you need to get out more & get a life!!

Special thanks to Emma who puts up with us, we can be very demanding for coffee re-fills. Thank you Thank you.

we loved maggies we went there quite alot in september . all i can say to clare is why dint she say hello to maggie?? works both ways love !!

Liz W  (18 November 2004)

I would like to say that I was in Corfu for the whole summer. I was one of the Thomas Cook reps and can honestly say that the food was fantastic, it was like a little taste of home. the food, value for money and service are all second to none. The breakfasts are the best in resort and I wan to say a big thank you to maggie and co for all the wonderful food.

I dare anyone to finish a large fish and chips AND have a desert.

Thank you Maggie!

James B  (27 October 2004)

Nothing personal clare, but people are always ready to critisize,no i dont know you,but how well do you know maggie.
You dont know the problems that she may have,we have known maggie like forever and i know the pressure she is under at the moment.
Her husband is not at all well just now and a few other things which i wont go into because they are confidentual.
She really is a lovely person, anyone can go up to her and ask her how she is and she will talk to you.

Clare   (27 October 2004)

dear james thank you for your message regarding maggies bar the only reason we went back again was to see if we had misread the situation about being ignored and having read all the other comments about the place saying how good maggies was and friendly thought we would give it another go but the people were still the same ignorant unless your face fitted and i would also like to take this opportunity to tell you i am not aWHINGING BRIT and as you dont know me would suggest you keep comments like that toyourself as tis could offend people

James B  (24 October 2004)

forgot to tick boxes

James B  (24 October 2004)

If you dont like maggies Clare then why go back, whinging brits give the uk a bad name.

Clare   (12 October 2004)

we visited roda last year and this year we stayed with friends whilst there and had a brilliant time but we were very disappointed with the attitude of maggie n des at maggies bar on the 2 occassions we went there neither maggie nor des came and said hello or asked if there was anything else we wanted or needed they only seemed to be interested in the people they knew the food was ok nothing to write home about though the hospitality of the other resturants were much more welcoming the improvments on the bar next door are FANTASTIC WELL DONE TO THE BUILDER WHO DONE IT ITS A SHAME THESE IMPROVEMENTS DON,T WORK ON THE OWNERS OF THE PLACE

James B  (25 September 2004)

My wife and i have known maggie a very long time, and we are very good friends.
Although we always eat at nikos, maggies food is very good but she knows we love the greek food.
Maggie and des are lovely hard working people and do not deserve bad mouthing from some clowns that go there for a few weeks a year.
Maggie runs a nice bar and tries to cater for eveyone but you will always get the odd one in every establishment that you just cannot please,my advice to these people is stay at home.
All the best to Maggie and Des.

Donna H  (14 September 2004)

In my opinion Maggies does the best full english breakfast in the resort! Everything about this restaurant is superb and we used it many times on our two week holiday, well done to Maggie and all her staff you are great! We are coming back next year and will definitley be eating there.

Shelly T  (06 September 2004)

Chill out shimirel. Have u ever thought that the people you are going on about are writing from the same pc/company. Everyone has a right to their view, this is wot the sites about. By the way i had a luvly fish and chips at maggies!

Bill M  (05 September 2004)

Dear Maggie
me my family and friends have been coming to roda for the past 16 years, and we have always used maggie's on many accassions to eat and drink. I have found them very helpful and friendly. The food is excellent compared to down the road, Maggie's is the best and if you visit roda for the first time do not hesitate to call in for a decent meal and good company and a very relaxing time. If anything Maggie's is just what roda needed english food and very friendly staff.
Dont forget to do the bonus ball each time you visit!

Shimirel   (03 September 2004)

I've read the reviews on this site with great interest. While examining the posts in this thread, I’ve found some one posting messages under multiple names. I’ve emailed the webmaster of this site to inform him that these messages are posted by the same person and haven’t received any response. The messages from sam chart, tom jones, david Thomas and nosey parker are all the same person writing under different names. You can check this yourself by clicking on the View all comments by sam chart link underneath the message. Needless to say I find it very hard to trust the comments of some one who needs to post under multiple assumed names. I hope this message helps you better judge if Maggie’s is a place to visit on your holidays.

Best Regards,
Richard

Hannah M  (02 September 2004)

Just returned from Roda after 2 weeks holiday with my children and friends. Maggies bar was great and we were made to feel very welcome by the lovely barman Steve. THANKS STEVE???

Kev & marj H  (29 August 2004)

Well we have just returned from Roda, having paid it our first visit with our 2 children, 2 friends and their child.

We stumbled on Maggies in Roda and had to pay it a visit as one of the party is a meat and 2 veg man. However having said that we found a warm welcome from Maggie and all the staff. They couldn't do enough for all 3 kids. Like most children, mine can be fussy eaters but I had no problems here, everything that Maggie put in front of them they ate whole heartedly from basic kids meals to lamb chops.

I had to try the "large fish" and believe me this is one hell of a scary portion. 2 pieces of your largest chip shop served fish. It was of excellent quality and huge proportion. I dont think I ate for another 24 hours after.

We ordered food for the children that wasn't on Maggies menu and low and behold they supplied it. Maggie even took time out to sit and talk to my very shy daughter who spoke her first words ever to a stranger and stunned us all. She even gave the children presents when they had eaten all there tea up (THANKS MAGGIE)

We enjoyed the food and hospitality so much we started to meet there for breakfast as it set us up for the day with one of her full english breakfasts, as for her crumpets with fried eggs on top. I am now hooked.

One evening the restaurant was full and we tried Maggies bar that she has opened next door. The surroundings were very relaxed, beer in abundance and the barman (Sorry I never caught his name)was a pleasure, even climbing into the church graveyard opposite to retrieve the childrens football.

Don't get me wrong, we enjoy the local Greek food and ate elsewhere on a number of occasions but for good quality and generous portions we found ourselves pulled back to Maggies when we could get a table as it was very popular.

As for a number of reviews I have read here on cleanliness and quality of food I can only say that we ate here on about 7 - 8 occasions and each time I found the restaurant floor, tables and crockery and cutlery to be scrupulously clean. The serving hatch to the kitchen was large and open and there for everyone to see into. The local lady chefs I saw and the kitchen, was very clean and tidy

We saw the same faces eating there on a number of occasions, some even telling us that they had been there year in and year out and I couldn't blame them. Every night the restaurant was busy but the staff never faltered and always had a smile and a chat to the customers.

As for these reviews, well I dont know !! Of the number of occasions that 4 adults and 3 kids ate there with us we never had any problems just high quality home cooked food with genuine hospitality

Thanks Maggie and all your staff for a wonderful holiday and WE WILL be back next year, so start stocking up on the fish !!

Kev, Marj, Matty and Sophie

Andy F  (27 August 2004)

Hey Maggie - i just wanted to add my own testimonial. I used to work in Roda and Maggie's was the one restaurant people would ask me about, week in, week out. How on earth can she be criticised for givein the holidaying Great British Public what it wants? I ate there regularly and enjoyed every last morsel of the fabulous minute-steak sandwiches, Double decker burgers and the Scottish breakfast... well what can I say? Maggie home-makes her own square sausage which is out of this world. Her breakfasts are better than my mothers (and if she reads this I'll get a thick ear).

I have to add that guests who visit Corfu and choose to add potentially damaging comments to this website ought to think before they act. It is usually wonderful helping guests to enjoy their stay on the island but to read such slanderous comments (mhich are mis-spelled and grammatically incorrect most of the time) is frustrating and almost heart breaking. I would just love to see less grumbling about minor affairs and a lot more positivity. Thank you Maggie for looking after us all in Roda and I'll be back to see you soon.

Mary   (20 August 2004)

I have been visiting Roda for a number of years and have always found Maggies to serve excellent food. Both Maggie and her husband Des work extremely hard throughout the summer season to ensure that each and every customer has a pleasurable experience. I thought this website was meant to give an honest opinion, not a hurtful one?

I personally would like to thank Maggie and Des for serving hot, tasty fresh meals, along with their wonderful team. Looking forward to seeing you all later this year.

If people dont enjoy eating in Maggies, try Bernies. I'm sure you will have a truly 'speechless' experience!

Maggie   (18 August 2004)

Whilst, up till now, having stayed above the fairly obvious attempts to harm my business in Roda, I feel it only fair to myself and my customers to highlight the inaccuracy of the recent contribution to this site by 'Tracey - August 12 2004' (comments on Roda resort page).
Never in the past 17 years in business here have any of my customers suffered adverse effects medically or otherwise from my or my very loyal and talented staff's cooking. This can be verified both by the resident doctors in Roda, some of whom eat here regularly, and by the Greek Restauranteurs, Yes, my competition surrounding my establishment. In fact, I have been invited by them to join a new association aimed at improving standards in the locality. You know, this page was originally set up to provide valuable information to new visitors to our village, now it has become a vehicle for malcontents with an agenda to harm, some of whom hide bravely behind an alias, and some of whom are not even tourists - and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to work that out!
So without being in the least bit relaxed about these shoddy slanders by sad people, my reply is 'get a life & leave us alone'. The good people who come back year after year will be the Judge.

Alan S  (18 August 2004)

Okay, I have lived here in Corfu a darn long time and Mag and Des have known them just as long, Not every one loves every one here, so what!!! the food is Brill, I eat there every week and yes its the fish n chips, service and price has always been right, and I have always been treated right, difficult git that I can be, anyone that knows me will know I call a spade a spade and use my own name, so Mr nosey parker no guts if you have a genuine comment instead of a personal slag off, have the guts to use your own name. Yes tourists go there for fish and chips, If that is what they like on holiday it is their business MR MURPHY, Maggies is a tourist restaurant (Mind you I still see locals in there) and it not for some disgruntled expat presumably, probably with connections to a failing Roda restaurant to express his jealousy on a site to try and discredit a good business.
Personalities have no place here, just true honest comments about food and service !!!!!!!

Julia F  (16 August 2004)

We have just returned from 2 weeks in Roda, first time ever in Corfu. We ate at Maggies 3 times during our stay and the food, service and friendliness was excellent. Maggie took a shine to my 3 year old boy, Luke, as he wore glasses and she thought he looked like the Milky Bar Kid. The kids meals are the best in Roda especially the sausages and chips.

If we go back to Roda next year I'm sure we will eat at Maggies more than 3 times.

Paul and cheryl W  (09 August 2004)

We have just returned from 2 weeks in Roda. Whilst we went there with the intention of solely eating Greek cuisine, we were generally disappointed with the quality of the greek meals served up at the various tavernas, with a couple of exceptions (Roda Park and Valentines). We ended up going to Maggies three times (the last night our party voted on where to spend our last evening). Staff were always friendly and Maggie made us feel at home. The quality of cooking was excellent even by English standards. P.S Maggie - we will be trying out your cheesecake recipe shortly ! - from the 'magnificent seven' (aka the nice family that are not from Birmingham, but from Shropshire).

Stacy D  (08 August 2004)

To the nice family from Birmingham who ate at maggies on Friday evening before leaving the resort that evening(i think you were staying at the Almoroso). Please could you get in contact with me at Maggies. The telephone number is 2663 064516 or e-mail no the adress Maggie gave to you. Thanks Hopefully talk to you soon.

Sue W  (08 August 2004)

I am absolutely horrified after reading the comments made on this site. We are here to give true honest and reliable views to would be tourists. The only rivalry here are between you people not the likes of Maggie's , Niko's and any of the other restaurants in Roda. I have known these people for many years and they would also be disgusted in what has been written. In regards to the gentleman who was bad after he supposed to have eaten in Niko's didn't it ever occur to him that it might have been just a stomach bug as this as also happened to me in Corfu. Also I am well travelled and when I go to foreign countries I like to sample their own local dishes, as well as British.
YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES

Jimmy S  (06 August 2004)

what a stitch up half of these bad comments are from rivals mates i went to maggies with the beleif from some clowns that she was a moody cow especially with kids . what a load of s**t. great woman great staff exellent food and i dont just mean the fish i ate all over roda . greek food italian wot ever took my fancy you need some english food now and again especially when youve been served up some right dodgy grub from that dodgy nicos family resturant i was ill for two days the remains are still on the beach by the pedlos . when we went to maggies an egg was thrown at couples table from the direction of some sour so called resturaunts ie bernies etc that way but she came out checked they were ok gave them a free meal & drinks and i thought u carnt say fairer than that her staff were a laugh as well its always packed but arnt the best places think on .the guvna

David T  (01 August 2004)

I thought this place was supposed to be about comments not rowing. Everone has a right to their opinion and if someone didnt like maggies thats up to them. Mr Lyons should remember that and maybe he should go elsewhere for his holls and broaden his enjoyment. i am a big roda fan but think maggies has gone down hill this year.

Heather M  (29 July 2004)

We go to Roda every year and like to eat in a variety of restaurants. Whilst there this year we ate Greek, Italian, Chinese and English. It was all delicious but the food, we sampled at Maggies was by far the best of the holiday and I do not know where Paul Murphy was, but it certainly was not on Planet Maggies. Try the Chicken Rob Roy - stuffed with haggis and smothered in a drambuie sauce. And if you are lucky, bagpiped in to your table with an "adress to the haggis". Also the salad with sun ripened tomatoes, parmesan cheese etc. is the most wonderful salad I have ever tasted - the dressing is superb!
The fact that people were happy to sit in the new English pub to wait for a table says it all. Other restauants were complaining that they were quiet but every time we went to Maggies it was buzzin'. Superb food, superb service and when you have finished you meal plenty of entertainment in the pub next door! I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you are only allowed to eat Greek food when you go to Corfu ( and I am not knocking Greek food) then there would not be many tourists left in Roda!

Ken L  (27 July 2004)

nosey parker, tom jones? please do'nt hide behind stupid alias's be honest, use your real name. reported me to who? i repeat stuck up p***ks!! i go to corfu at least three times a year and will continue to do so, oh but i'd love to meet you, just to see how shallow you really are, maggies is very successful and great, get on with it!!!

Vikki R  (26 July 2004)

wen i was in roda may 31st-june 14th...i went to maggies, with my family of 12...me and my step sister found the womens bathroom very good with all the beauty things and stuff. my dads frend roy ordered the biggest fish meal they had and that was a challenge to eat...we had a great time but the staff werent very talkative...one bad thing about maggies is its very crowded and very small inside! overall it was canny nice >>>like to eat there next year!{{{
xxxx

Sam C  (23 July 2004)

just got back from roda. its the 4th time for me and have to say i found the people in maggies very unsociable. food was good and prices good but not very friendly. maybe just a bad nite.

Tom J  (22 July 2004)

just to let you know mr lyons that you have been reported for using bad language. i have been going to roda for years and will continue to but hopefully wont bump into the hankie brigade that you obviously belong too. we all have our opinions so get over it

Ken L  (20 July 2004)

just got back from corfu and visited maggies place, it was fantastic!
great menu, a good honest quality resturant run by people who know what quality and service really mean. after reading other peoples negative views about english people wanting to eat english food etc, i like to have the choice, i go on holiday to enjoy myself in the manner that i want. people like nosey parker should stay away, i ca'nt imagine them not having a take away in the uk from a foreign source, in short their just stuck up p***ks!!!

Nosey P  (18 July 2004)

I assure you Mr Murphy went to the Very Maggies you are talking about Miss mary Tighey or wotever ya name is. Why oh why dont people stay at home if they want english food? I have been a fan of Roda for years and always will be but we all have a right to our opinions Mary!
I also found Maggies to be a miserable hell hole. Theres a blinking english pub there now too AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!

Becky W  (14 July 2004)

hey maggie if your readin this because its becky, from bournemouth
(and hey steve if your reading this)
maggies is a great place with great food and service and the pub next door is great, the movies are great thanks to steve, i just hope he gets some more chick flicks for next year!!
so dont gip it because you dont know what your talking about!
see you next year! xXx

James B  (11 July 2004)

We have known maggie a long time and she is a lovely person but she knows that we go to corfu for the greek food.
Why people travel all that way to sit and eat fish and chips and sunday roast is beyond me,you can eat that crap any day in the uk.
Dont get me wrong i am not knocking maggie,we are good friends but we go there for the local food.

Suzanne H  (07 July 2004)

HI ALL.JUST COME BACK AND IT WAS LOVELY.MAGGIES PLACE IS BY FAR THE BEST PLACE TO EAT.YOU HAVE GOT TO TRY HER FISH AND CHIPS BUT BE WARNED DONT HAVE LARGE YOU WILL NEVER EAT IT.THANK YOU MAGGIE FOR THE FISHING BAIT IT WORKED A TREAT.TAKE CARE AND HOPE TO SEE YOU VERY SOON.

Mary T  (28 June 2004)

I can only assume Mr Murphy went to a different Maggies than the one we went to. Food was excellent (best fish and chips I've ever tasted) and staff couldn't do enough. And now Maggie has the Old Tavern pub next door you can drink until the early hours (and we did!) Thanks to Maggie for helping make our holiday special and love to Emma, Stacey, Dee and the gorgeous Steve. See you all in September.

Aine B  (19 May 2004)

Last time we were in Roda we went to maggies place and we were appalled at the service offered and the comments made by the chap that was running it at the time (I believe he is still there).
He shouted at our kids (even though they were not making any noise)and told our 18 month old baby to get his feet off the chair (even though his legs were not long enough to reach off the chair and they didn't have any high chairs for him to sit in!!)
The comments continued until we walked out. They should have had a sign up stating 'NO CHILDREN ALLOWED'.
Although the food was good - the service was appalling
We won't be going there again this year - unless the guy that was running it last time has left

James B  (08 May 2004)

I agree about eating loacal food,i dont go to corfu to eat english food cause we love the greek food.
We have been going to corfu for the last 18 yrs usually roda achravi.Maggies place is say you come down from the crossroads it is second on right and half way down that street on the right.
But the best greek food is nikos family taverna which is the second restaurant on the left down that street.
We are going on the 10th may for a week then we go back in june for 2 weeks,we love the place got a lot of friends there.

Cheryl M (07 May 2004)

Ive not been to Roda for a few years but im going back this June. Where is this Maggies then? I like to try the local food tho, not have a big english fry up!! May as well stay at home for that!

John L  (30 January 2004)

Just came accross this web page and thought that I should add my comments.
This sounds like the same Maggie that used to have a restaurant in Acharari a few years back. We went there on the first day of our holiday and didn't eat anywhere else for the rest of the week.
Looks like standards certainly haven't changed and next time I'm over in Corfu I'll certainly make a point of stopping in Roda.

Stephen D  (28 October 2003)

thanx to maggie and emma and maggies husband we enjoyed the 2 week stay in roda by eaing there 5 times foreveing meals and 4 times for breakfast and of course i also had the hots for emma.

emma if u r on the net plz email me i would love to talk 2 u again
thanx for some lovely meals

Michael L  (11 October 2003)

We go to Corfu three times a year and always make a point of eating at Maggies, the food, staff and resturant are excellent!!!

Denis M  (05 September 2003)

Excellent VFM. The portions are HUGE, so make sure you starve yourself all day.

Dave H  (22 August 2003)

My family and I stayed in Roda for two weeks from the 20th July to the 3rd August and the best place to eat was undoubtedly Maggies. The food was excellent and portions that were well above average.
We ate there for dinner five times and had breakfast there twice.

Maggie cooks the breakfasts herself and serves during the evening, she is very welcoming and chatty.

The one to try on the menu is LARGE fish and chips, I nearly fell off my chair when I saw what was put in front of me.........put it this way, you'd better be very very hungry.

The food is simply the best in the resort with a lovely relaxing enviroment. Very children friendly!!

Kevin S  (28 July 2003)

The service was brilliant, the meals even better! I had four Full English Breakfasts during my weeks stay, you geat a great big meal for E4.50. Another meal i had was vegetable risotto, which was gorgeous the first time i had it. Unfortunately though the second time, the vegetables were not chopped finely enough. We tried four restaurants in Roda, and this one came out on top.

Linda M  (29 May 2003)

well what can i say that hasnt been said before ,loverly especially if you are realy hungry

Karen J  (19 May 2003)

Fish, chips and mushy peas were great - watch what you order as you get a small, medium or large portion!

Nicola S  (22 April 2003)

loved this place and ate here most nights, the portions are HUGE be careful if you order large fish and chips because that is exactly what you will get, tried nearly everything on the menu and never had a bad meal maggie is brilliant and really makes you feel at home. be warned get here early or be prepared to wait for a table

Tommy C  (05 February 2003)

very good food at very cheap price with large portions.

Sally-ann M  (05 September 2002)

The service was excellent and the food was even better. Huge portions at a very reasonable price. Mixed grill, fish and chips, full english breakfast.....need I go on! All the staff are very friendly and Maggie is like a breath of fresh air.
