May - (Best Time to Visit)

Karen J

My husband and I (39 and 46) are going to the Aphrodite Hotel in Roda on 2nd May 2003 for two weeks. We normally like friendly locals, some places of interest to visit, good weather and good food and wine but are not too keen on overcrowded resorts full of lively bars and discos. Have we made the right choice?

Aphrodite Hotel - (Accommodation in Roda)

Just come back after two weeks 2/5 to 16/5 - it was brilliant. We are planning to go back in October or next May. The hotel was a bit quiet for the first weekend as there were only 15 of us there but it started to fill up from the Monday onwards. All the staff were very helpful and made us very welcome - in fact they couldn't do enough for us. The hotel also has its own souvenier shop which is very reasonably priced compared to other shops in the resort. The hotel itself (and the pool area) was absolutely spotless, was right on the beach and the food in the pool bar, snack bar and restaurant was excellent. Continental breakfast was the same every day (alternatives were available at extra cost) but consisted of orange juice, the freshest bread roll I've ever tasted, ham, cheese, hard boiled egg, toast, butter, jam/honey, cake and unlimited tea or coffee. At this time of year I certainly would not recommend this hotel/resort to anyone looking for a lively holiday as some of the bars and restaurants didn't open until the second week. It suited us as we wanted somewhere where we could relax and not be kept awake all night by noisy bars and discos!

Trip to Aqualand - (Corfu Excursions)

Karen J

We went to Aqualand on Sunday 11th May 2003 but wasn't told by anyone that it was the opening day! The widely advertised Wave Pool (new for 2003) didn't even have any water in it and by about 1 o'clock most of the slides had also closed because they'd run out of water - not very good for a waterpark really! I'm glad that we paid 17 euros each for the entrance ticket only - we had hired a car for 3 days so made our own way there - as I would have been really disappointed if we'd paid 33 euros each for the organised Thomson trip!

Roda - (Resorts on Corfu)

Karen J

Just come back after two weeks 2/5 to 16/5 and we absolutely loved it. The resort was a bit quiet over the first weekend but got busier as more and more bars and restaurants opened. One good thing, according to the locals and us, was that the Scouna Club wasn't opening this year! We stayed at the Aphrodite Hotel which is right on the front opposite the taxi rank and couldn't have wished for a better location. The resort is not huge and didn't get overly busy or noisy - although one night we did hear some lads going home in the early hours of the morning - and that was only because they were singing '...it's 3 in the morning and we're going home tomorrow'..! Most of the shops sell touristy items like baseball caps, leather belts, perfume, watches, etc. We loved it so much we're planning to go back in October or next May. We did not have a bad meal anywhere and all the locals were very friendly.

Maggies Place - (Restaurants in Roda)

Fish, chips and mushy peas were great - watch what you order as you get a small, medium or large portion!

Roda Park Restaurant - (Restaurants in Roda)

Only had pizza but it was great!

May - (Best Time to Visit)

Karen J

Got back on Friday and the weather was brilliant although we were told that the day time temperatures were unusually hot for the time of year - it was more like the weather they get in July and August! It was a bit chilly in the evenings though - in fact one or two nights were very cold so we had to ask for extra blankets!

Nikos Family Taverna - (Restaurants in Roda)

Karen J

Can't understand why this only gets 4/10 as everyone seems to this it's brilliant!

Aqualand - (Places to Visit on Corfu)

Karen J

Not the best water park I've ever been to - wave pool wasn't open and some of the smaller slides closed because they didn't have any water! Food was great if you like McDonalds but was overpriced - exactly what happens when you have a captive audience!

TUI - (Tour Operators on Corfu)

Karen J

Couldn't fault anything at all. Our flight from Cardiff to Corfu only took 2hrs 55mins, our luggage was first off the conveyor belt and it we didn't have to wait too long for everyone to get on the transfer coach. We were going to Roda so we shared with the people for Sidari but when we got to the first accommodation in Sidari we were called up and transfered to a taxi as we were the only two people going to Roda. This was great as I don't know what time we would have got to our hotel if we'd had to wait for the full coach to be dropped-off. Our resort rep, Louise, was absolutely brilliant eventhough this was her first time in the north of the island and we were the first batch of the season. She had a lovely personality and was very helpful. Our return flight was also trouble-free apart from a slight mix-up at the airport. When we go to the airport there was a large queue outside and the rep (not Louise) told us that it was for the Cardiff flight as the check-in desk wasn't open. Turned out that it was for a different flight and the Cardiff desk was in fact open! We were then due to land in Cardiff at 21:45 but actually landed at 21:20!
