Roda - (Resorts on Corfu)

Roda is a lovely spot and not bad as a base from which to explore the island. We hired a car for three days and found the roads surprisingly quiet - much better value than paying to go on the organised excursions. The mountains are stunning, and beach hopping well worth while. Drop into Corfu Town too. The tourist office will hire you a car at a good price - jeeps are the best thing if you're going up into the hills as some of the roads are unsurfaced.

Stayed in the Elenitsa Appartments, which were basic but clean with a spacious and shady balcony. From other people's comments on the accommodation section of this site, I would recommend asking for a top floor appartment (as we did) to avoid problems with damp. Local restaurants were all good and excellent value for money, whilst the beach was great - why would you need a swimming pool when the sea is so warm and clear? The nightlife didn't dominate the village, but was there if you wanted it, and not dominated by too many Brits. For something different to do in the evenings, go pony trekking to explore a bit more of the coastline and hills.

The mossies weren't as bad as I'd heard in advance, but would still pack the repellent! Also, if you can, book a private taxi transfer from the airport - we were sitting around for two hours waiting for another flight to come in even before we even got started.

Elenitsa Studios - (Accommodation in Roda)

Having looked at this website before departure, I was really worried about what these appartments were going to be like. In the event, I don't know what the fuss was about. We were on the second floor of block B, and had no problem - our appartment was light, clean and spacious and much better than I'd expected for a £230 late deal. Okay, so there were a few minor bits of maintainance which needed doing, and the plumbing was slightly dodgy, but you expect that on a Greek holiday (and on a British 2* holiday as well). The balcony was in the shade, but that was a relief given the heat in the first half of the week. We could even see the sea from it!

As for those people complaining about lack of a swimming pool: (a) there isn't one advertised, so you haven't really got a leg to stand on; (b) you can use the pools in the other hotels for free anyway; and (c) what's wrong with the beach? The sea's gorgeous!

The only real problem was that it could be very hot at night unless you opened the shutters, in which case you risked getting bitten by mossies. However, I think this is a problem everywhere unless you pay a lot more to stay somewhere with air conditioning. One of the shops in the vilage hires out fans, so that might be a good idea. Oh yes, and the local dogs can be a bit noisy first thing in the morning.
