Elpida Apartments - (Accommodation in Sidari)

David M

If these apartments are the ones we know, they are located in a very quiet area to the west of Sidari, in Agios Yannis. You would need a hire car to make the most of your stay, as the apartments are in a secluded area, just off a small road leading to the hills. Elpida is a fastidious woman who keeps her place tidy - don't cross her, or you'll know it! She has two sisters who also have studios in the same area. They are all lovely people, and we have grown to loke them a lot over the years that we have been holidaying in Corfu. We "stayed with" Elpida for a couple of holidays, then changed to her sister's "Angelica" just for a change. Opposite the apartments is a taverna "Green Heaven" (at least, it was still there in 2001). Not much for kids, the area is peaceful and ideally suited for that idyllic well-earned rest. If you have the courage, get a flight, hire a car, and just drive. Ask for directions to "The Wave" taverna when you get to Sidari, then ask for directions to the apartments (just around the corner). None of the sisters speak or understand much English, but you'll get by. Don't forget to haggle over the cost per night. If you get to speak to Angelica, tell her "Katos" sent you - she'll know who.......

Vassilis - (Accommodation in Sidari)

Can't help you with the accommodation, but the resort of Sidari can be all things to all men. It is a lively place at night, although there are a number of quieter bars, tavernas and restaurants within walking distance of the centre. For a friendly atmosphere, try the "Palazzo Bar" in Sidari itself, and "La Venezia" restaurant on the outskirts (unfortunately, in the opposite direction). Great pizzas, as well as local dishes. Loads of other ethnic eateries - Indian, Chinese, and plenty of take-aways for the late-night "munchies". We're there in July/August also - lookout for a bald fifty-something with a beard if you get to the Palazzo bar about 9pm each evening (pre-dinner cocktails !!).

Palazzo Bar - (Bars in Sidari)

David M

Don't take any notice of the ratings, the Palazzo is a friendly, bustling bar, typical of the resort. Quiet by day, as are all bars, but it comes alive about 8.00 pm. George, Yannis (I think they're brothers) and the rest of the staff are efficient and friendly, and you may just get a free drink if you spend enough!! Good cocktails, and well-located for the rest of the bars, restaurants and tavernas. Don't "nick" the bar-stools by the front corner - they're ours for a fortnight !!

Venezia Restaurant - (Restaurants in Sidari)

This is our favourite of all restaurants in Sidari. "Big George" the waiter used to be at "Diamonds" before it folded a few years ago, and we followed him!! We've holidayed every year in Sidari since 1986 (!!) and eat frequently at Venezia. Needless to say, we now know most of the waiters. The food is excellent - there's a long list of pizzas, all made there and then, as well as a good choice of Greek dishes - do try the prawns - spicy and delicious. Because of its popularity, it's sometimes difficult to get a table. Do what the Greeks do, though - eat late. They don't turn a hair at customers as late as midnight!! If you do speak to Big George, mention "Moussias" ("The Beard") - he'll know who you mean.......

I've just spoken to George - he was fishing, but hadn't caught anything !!. (it was 1330 UK time, Feb. 7th 2008).  He told me that he won't be at La Venezia this year.   He said he'll text me when he knows where he's likely to be.  We'll find out in July, though, when we take our next holiday in Sidari.  However, we'll continue to eat at La Venezia.........
